Winter is the coldest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere from December to February and in the southern hemisphere from June to August. It's a time associated with plunging temperatures and icy weather, but a season that can provide angry blizzards, yet stunning views of nature's palette.

I was so very taken by the frosted long grasses and weeds, on this beautiful late afternoon winter day, that I think I could have covered the entire canvas with that alone! However, the wonderful tree, with its hollowed out trunk also drew my attention.

Land of the Snow Queen

Mixed Media/Acrylic Transfer
8" x 8"
SOLD

This painting was created using an image transfer process: layers of my photos altered in Photoshop, followed by layers of paint, markers, etc. The results are always unexpected. When finished, it was easy to title, it brought to mind The Snow Queen, written by Hans Christian Andersen, which remains one of my favourite fairy tales.

  • Winter's Brush

Winter's Brush

All three of these winter paintings, were inspired by the ice storm of 2013. Before that, I never had any desire to paint "winter". In this painting it was the delicate textures of brush, and grasses and the subtle palette that inspired me.
