Leslie Cline Biography

I worked in the corporate world for years, taking an art course here and there at OCAD, George Brown, AGO, and Avenue Art School – some I completed but usually some work got in the way. I have always loved painting, but finding the time was a challenge. In 2016, I started the journey to immerse myself in painting full time. It involved lots of changes in my life, but I am excited about all of them. I am looking forward to spending the rest of my life painting and continuing to explore, learn and develop as an artist and create pieces that connect with others.

I work primarily in acrylics. My work ranges from abstract to more realistic paintings of nature. To me, it is like cardio and weights — you need to do both for the best workout. I need to do abstracts and more realistic pieces to feel balanced.

I have always been passionate about colour and texture, and how they can work together to create paintings that draw you in, and that you want to keep coming back to explore further. I am very influenced by my trips to Africa. I am continuing to develop a body of work focused on the animals that I have seen there, and from my many photo references. My garden gives me a sense of joy, and spring time flowers beg to be painted, as do the forest paths I have hiked. When I paint abstracts, I let the paint lead me, whether it starts with a splatter of paint, or reacting to a build-up of layers that set a direction. The fun comes in being open and flexible to follow the ‘voice’ of the paint.
