Adriana Romkes
ON MARCH 22, 2018, Adriana Romkes, presented From Mud Pies to Ceramic Sculpture to WAAH members at the AGH.
Adriana is a local artist who grew up in the lovely village of Greensville, on the Niagara Escarpment, along the historic Spencer Creek. The daughter of Dutch Immigrants, she developed an appreciation of organic farming, as well as for the crafts by learning how to cook and sew and work on furniture with the family business. She has spent her life studying and making art, design and crafts.
She is inspired by the spiritual or universal connection we have with nature and the environment. I wish to draw, paint, sculpt, photograph and write about it. In the fall of 2013, she was visited by a Great Horned Owl. These owls are my initial foray into sculpting with clay, techniques acquired through pottery classes and studio time at Dundas Valley School of Art. With each piece, I am trying new construction methods, styles, glazing and firing techniques. Each sculpture is a one-of-a-kind, with own distinct unique personality and characteristics. My recent works have developed into a more refined quality and is marked by my own distinct styling. I make ceramic sculptures, relief sculptures and tiles.
