Stev'nn Hall Biography

Stev'nn grew up in Brockville, Ontario with a 35 mm camera in one hand and a paintbrush in the other. He studied film, painting and photography at Concordia University in Montreal and continues to draw influences from these disciplines.

After working as an award-winning television producer at CHUM and CTV, Hall began thinking about something from his past and decided to follow it back - to travel that road again but in a different direction.

Stev'nn returns to his roots with his current landscape series.  These are places seen by a boy riding backseat in the car, his eyes still half in love with sky. These paint-splattered enlargements depict the fields, ponds, roads and big skies of his childhood - and explore the boundary between photography and painting.

He roughs up the work with sharp brushstrokes and personal scratchings. They’re bled through with the ambient light of 1970s camera photography, all that crackling at the edges as if the pictures were stained by whiskey. Hall reworks his idea of the past into his present. Through looking back he finds his way forward.

Stev’nn and his work have been showcased on the (artist) reality TV series, “Star Portraits” – painting Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy.

He has been featured twice on Bravo! News.

Stev’nn’s work (for his solo show “Horizon” at Muse Gallery in Toronto), was reviewed in the Globe and Mail by art critic R.M. Vaugh.
