Amanda McKinney Sparrow Biography

Growing up in the Niagara Wine region of Southern Ontario, I drew inspiration from an agricultural based community. Currently my practise focuses on aspects of environmental awareness, humanity and existence.

A mother, practicing artist and visual arts instructor, I began post secondary school in Early Childhood Education and Photography at Niagara College (2000-2002). This led to an Art Fundamentals Certificate at Sheridan College (2002-2003). Next, I attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, during 2003-07, majoring in drawing and painting. As a student at OCAD I started working as the Education Assistant at the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, teaching an array of subject and media.

Since 2007 I have focused as an Artist Instructor at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. In 2008 I started volunteering with the Women’s Art Association of Hamilton. Duties have included assisting with the coordination of exhibitions, coordinating workshops, assisting with information and advertising displays at community events and helping raise money for arts scholarships at local universities and institutions. In 2013, I co-founded the A-Z Collective, which focuses on ideas of space, time and nature.
